Mochilita Privacy Policy

Draft. Have an attorney review before publishing. Last updated: [DATE]

Mochilita is an app that helps children who speak Spanish learn English and keep up at school. It is directed to children. It is built so that we never receive information about your child or your family. This policy covers the Mochilita app (App Store, Google Play, Microsoft Store) and the Mochilita website.

Who we are: Jay Bay Creates LLC, 1425 Roughrider Blvd #212, Dickinson, ND 58601, USA, hola@mochilita.app. You can contact us with any question about this policy or your child's privacy.

The short version

What we collect

From the app: nothing. The app does not send any information to us or to anyone else. It works fully offline after it is installed.

From the website: like every website, our web host's servers automatically receive the technical information a browser sends to load a page (IP address, browser type, the page requested and the time). Our host is [Netlify / Cloudflare]. We use this only to deliver the site, keep it secure and fix errors. We don't use it to identify, profile, track or advertise to anyone, we don't combine it with anything else, and we have turned off any visitor analytics. The host keeps these logs for [X days, per the host's policy] and then deletes them. The website sets no cookies.

What stays on your device (and only there)

The app saves the following in the device's own storage. It never leaves the device unless you choose to export it (see "Files you choose to save or share").

What Why
Child's first name or nickname, and whether Spanish wording should be for a girl or a boy To greet your child and write Spanish correctly
School grade, subject levels, placement results To show the right lessons
Progress, stars, streaks, answers, missed questions, reading speed (words per minute) To practice and review
Feelings check-ins ("How do you feel today?") So your child can name feelings; you can see them in Grown-ups
Writing practice and the writing journal So your child can reread their work
Homework words and math facts you or the teacher enter To practice this week's homework
Mascot name, closet items, settings, PIN To keep the app the way you set it
"Papás también aprenden" progress (the parent's own English lessons) For the grown-up's practice
Several children's names and progress, if you use classroom mode or add profiles So each child has their own place

Microphone and audio: - Record and replay ("Escúchate") and reading checks: the recording is kept in the device's memory only while the screen is open so your child can hear it, then discarded. It is never saved or sent. - Speech recognition (speaking feedback): only in the App Store / Google Play version, and only with the phone's built-in on-device recognizer. The child's voice is processed on the phone and is never sent to Apple, Google or us. If a phone can't recognize speech on the device, the feature stays off. The website version never uses speech recognition. - Spoken audio: the app speaks with voices built into the device. Some browsers also offer online voices that send the text being read to the browser maker (for example Google or Microsoft). Mochilita never uses an online voice unless a grown-up turns on "Allow online voices" behind the grown-up gate, and even then the child's name is removed from the text first. - Family voice recordings: a grown-up (never the child) can record their own voice reading the app's lines. These recordings are stored only on the device. A family voice model is made on your own computer, not by an online service.

How long it is kept: until you delete it. You can delete one child's profile, or everything, at any time in Grown-ups › Backup and reset › Erase everything, or by deleting the app (or clearing the website's data in your browser). The app also keeps only recent history (for example the last 60 feelings check-ins).

Files you choose to save or share

Some buttons create something you decide what to do with: Save backup file, progress reports, weekly summaries, classroom reports, printable worksheets, notes to the teacher, exported voice recordings, and language-pack files. These are created on your device. Where you keep or send them (your own iCloud, Google Drive, email, the school) is your choice and is covered by that service's privacy policy. We never receive them.

Teacher word lists

A teacher can make a link or code with a list of words using the teacher page (maestra.html). The words travel inside the link itself, after the "#" sign, which browsers never send to any server. Opening the link only adds words to the app on your device. Nothing about your child is sent to the teacher or to us.

Schools and classroom mode

A teacher or school can use classroom mode on one shared tablet. All names and progress stay on that tablet; we receive nothing, so we never hold student education records. A school that copies a classroom report out of the app holds that report under its own policies (for example FERPA). We suggest schools use first names or nicknames only.

Children's rights and your rights

Because all information stays on your device, you are in full control: you can review it (Grown-ups › progress), change it (Grown-ups › settings) or delete it (Erase everything) at any time, without asking us. We have no copy to review or delete. If you have a question, contact us and we will help.

App stores and age signals

When you download Mochilita from an app store, the store (Apple, Google or Microsoft) handles the download, any purchase, and its own age checks and parental approvals under its own privacy policy. Where state law (for example Texas) requires it, the app may receive an age range or parental-approval signal from the store. If it does, the app uses that signal only on the device, only to follow the law, does not store it longer than needed, and never sends it to us or anyone else.

Security

The app has no servers or accounts that could be breached. The website is served only over a secure connection (HTTPS) with strict settings that stop the page from loading anything from other sites. A grown-up gate (a question for adults or a PIN) protects the settings, grown-up reports, backups, deletion and any link out of the app.

Things Mochilita does not do

No advertising. No behavioral or targeted ads. No selling or "sharing" of personal information. No profiling. No location. No camera. No contacts. No social features or chat with other people (the mascot's chat is scripted). No push notifications. No links to other websites for children. No third-party code that collects data.

Changes to this policy

If we change this policy, we will post the new version here and update the date above. We will not start collecting personal information from children without first updating this policy and getting verifiable parental consent.
